The Golden Rule

Finally back in Singapore! 

For the moment, Luke, my white person college buddy from Australia is here to visit for a couple of days, and Heather, Claire and I have been taking him sightseeing. I can say that I have never done as much sightseeing in Singapore in my whole life as I have just done in the past three days. Also, I have never appreciated the invention of air conditioners more than I have as of now. 

The most painful (but fun) places we've been to so far are the botanical gardens and the zoo. Every time I spot another one of those special air-conditioned viewing centers, I feel like the heavens has just bestowed a gift on me. I then proceed to slow-motion run in relief towards the center, tears of bliss pouring down my face. Of course this takes place in my head. In real life I just let out a grunt of approval and trudge over at a slightly faster pace. 

My white person  friend Luke was kind enough to snap some quick outfit photos for me, so here they are! So deeply in love with my new Bimba and Lola bag that is perfect for spicing up any dull outfit. I already know this will become one of my holiday fashion staples. Also loving the Criminal Damage cropped shirt that is such a clever play on words.

You're from the 70s, but I'm a 90's bitch

I am born in the year of 94', but since I didn't get the chance to live the fashion of that era - or the lack of, for that matter (think fanny packs, slap bracelets, puka shell necklaces and hair scrunchies) - here's an outfit put together by the three things that can't get anymore 90s: denim, tartan and creepers. Kept a modern touch to the ensemble with the touch of pleather in the shirt and leopard prints on my creepers.

I spent the better part of the rest of the 90s gnawing on teething toys, watching the original series of Thomas The Tank Engine and reading Winnie the Pooh. Oh yeah, I was a HUGE fan. I had a complete set of diecast metal trains, as well as the full series of Winnie the Pooh books and cassette tapes. Apparently I can now sell the trains on eBay as vintage items.

Is it just me, or do I suddenly feel extremely old? My toys are now considered vintage.

Cross My Heart

Helloooooo everybody!

I must sincerely apologise for the almost two month hiatus I've just taken on whim! It's just that I was pretty busy while I was in Singapore, and uni picked up at a really fast pace this semester, so I've barely had the time to do any outfit shoots at all. I must say, I am really glad to be back in the cold and drier weather in Melbourne, despite the ridiculous amount of rain and wind it's been offering up these few weeks.

I paired this cross print sweater with pleather-look leggings for a tougher, sort of grunge-esque look that I've been quite into recently. However, I couldn't resist keeping my usual collar and put on a white blouse with cutouts. I think the cutouts show the perfect amount of skin in the right area and keeps that slightly feminine element in the outfit. Took out my black lapalette bag to go with the sort of monochromatic theme I've got going on here.

Also, check out the new bad boys I have on my feet! (no more wedge creepers *celebrating in background*) I get many mixed opinions on them, but I'm going to wear them anyway. They're so high and loud and badass. I find the leopard print pony hair a really gorgeous touch. Not a fan of animal prints, but I couldn't resist. Well, I can't resist alot of things.

Burnt Autumn

Autumn is my second favourite season, next to winter, but only when there's snow. There's something extraordinarily beautiful about the autumn leaves, even more than the wild bloom of spring. Everything practically oozes red and gold vibrance, its like nature's way of going out with a bang -

"Remember me even when winter comes." 

The forecast predicted gloomy weather the whole week and I felt like it was more the time than ever to being out more colours as the dreary winter months draw closer.This lovely burnt-orange coloured top has been with me for ages, and I think given it's versatility and the wear I get out of it, it's high time it has a feature on my blog. And what better season to match this with than autumn?

I paired it with this black and navy ZARA coat that has beautiful pleather detailing and knitted sleeves. While all the colours are slightly on the dull side, it also makes it very easy to match with different pieces, especially in the colder seasons. I absolutely love how the coat brings together the different textures and structured silhouette  for a very unique piece indeed.

So who says the florals need to be kept in the closet for colder days? I busted out my floral shorts to create a transition for the block colours of the coat and the top, and added a vintage touch with my favourite set of collar pins.

OKAY I KNOW EVERYONE IS SICK OF MY CREEPER WEDGES. I CANT HELP IT THEY'RE SO COMFY. THIS IS THE LAST POST WITH THEM IN IT.

Or maybe second last... I PROMISE I'LL STOP WEARING THEM.

Besides the free shipping to Australia for ASOS, I honestly have very little to say about shopping in Melbourne. Sometimes I feel it's so backward I want to hide my head in a hole like a depressed ostrich and cry. (by the way, ostriches don't really stick their heads in the ground.)

You can imagine my excitement when I heard topshop was having a sale. No one can blame me for being attracted to sales. Women's brains are just wired to respond to this word. There is evidence showing higher levels of brain activity in women shown the word "sale".

I picked up a printed blouse with cream piping round the collar, shoulders and cuffs. It's got a silk finish with just enough weight in the fabric to stay flowy but static free in this dry weather. I wanted the beautiful print to be at the center of attention so I kept everything else to a simple black.

The creeper wedges are also a new addition to my shoe collection; they came in the mail the day before the shoot. I took a look at them and got worried because of how big and high they look, but I was just so in love with them once I put them on. They're extremely comfortable, stable and perfect for just stomping around places. Also, plus points for helping me feel like less of a midget.

Summer, Oh Summer

Two weeks back at college and a week into the start of uni; things are just starting to fall into rhythm. When I say rhythm, I actually mean camping in the wonderfully air conditioned library everyday - regardless of whether I'm doing any work. 

"Well, Rachel, it's summer! Soak up the sun and enjoy the outdoors!" You say. 

You know there's always one of those people you know who just HATE the sun. They stand/sit in any shade possible, no matter how minimal, with a huge broad rimmed hat and humongous sunglasses on. They've slathered sunscreen on every exposed inch of skin. They're also holding a huge umbrella in one hand, a mini battery operated fan in the other that's working at full speed, and sporting a VERY unamused look. 

Welcome to my life.

The trick is to go to the cheapest shops/ online stores you can find. You'll want material that's lightweight, meaning the material is also cheap - you'll get better things for much less. Save your money for something you want to invest in long term, like the perfect winter coat, a classic pair of shoes, or a versatile clutch. 

The shorts I bagged from a little pushcart store I happened to chance upon while holidaying in Malaysia, and they cost me only about 8AUD.  They're such a flattering cut in the perfect summery floral print. And the best thing? They have pockets. Pockets will change your life forever. 

I paired it with this chiffon blouse I nicked off my mom (haha), tied it together with a vintage leather belt I got at a flea market and finished it off with my brown wedges. Keeping with the floral theme, I put together my baby blue flower bracelet and a headband I made myself. Yay for crafts! 

Also, say hi to another member of my bag family - my horse backpack from Lapalette. Possibly the only backpack I'll ever carry because I think backpacks are too much trouble. It's a beautiful dusky blue with such an interesting shape and design. And I love horses, so what can I say?

Christmas!

To be completely honest with everyone, I enjoy Christmas, but sometimes it MAKES ME COMPLETELY INSANE. The Christmas songs just drive me round the looney bin. If I hear Jingle Bell Rock ONE more time, I might just go mad.

I know I said doing an outfit post was useless because I'd be sweating away in hot and humid Malaysia. But when I saw the grapevine in all it's splendour in my grandma's garden, I immediately changed my mind and started putting an outfit together. But that's not to say I wasn't perspiring profusely during the shoot. >:(

I saw the shoes at Bershka, one of the stores I frequent alot nowadays. To be quite honest it looked terrible on the shelf and an idea struck me: how funny would it be to try on those hideous shoes? Oh the irony, I ended up falling in love once I put them on. I knew the gold and black would be perfect for Christmas. Red and green come in the form of flowers in this outfit, plus an old ribbon my grandma gave me that matches the green on my skirt to a T. When it comes to colour and pattern, less is more, so little dashes of colour and glitter against the black stand out more and give the outfit an edgy look.

I love the A-line cut and pleats of the skirt, they hide my terrible pear shaped figure so well. :D My relatives were all "what pear shaped figure?!" and I was like: there we go. Skirt works like magic. ;D

I didn't take any full body shots with the shoes because the grass was muddy and the shoes are suede. Mud and suede? Cringe.
